Oh So Grateful: A Gratitude Practice

This busy holiday season has kept me away from much of my blog writing but I thought I'd share my gratitude practice here for the next 20 days. Each day through Christmas I'm posting one thing for which I'm grateful. I've been thinking a lot about gratitude and being thankful over the last few months and one thing I've come to realize is that the best way to a happy and fulfilling life is through gratitude. Instead of focusing on what we don't have, we must focus on what we do have. There is so much to be grateful for in each and every moment.

One of my yoga instructors recently said that while we can't control what happens around us - our life situation, the people in our lives, or the events that transpire - we can control 3 things: our thoughts, our words, and our actions. This has really stuck with me as a reminder that we have more control, more power, over our lives than we realize. Its so easy to let the ego take over and place blame on external circumstances and other people as the source of our unhappiness, stress, or sadness. The truth, though, is that no one outside of ourselves can control how we think about, how we feel about, and how we live our lives. Instead of dwelling on all the things that aren't the way we want them to be, instead of focusing on all the things we don't have, we can find peace and contentment through the practice of gratitude. Being grateful for even the littlest things, or the things we take for granted, like food on the table or a roof over our head, can bring us great joy. The more we think about and embrace the good in our lives, letting go of our wants and our sense of lack, the more at peace we will be.

Life is good. Its a gift that is filled with an abundance of things tok be grateful for. Choose happiness, choose joy, choose gratitude, and choose to be at peace within.

Oh So Grateful Day 1:
I've spent a lot of time lately thinking about #gratitude. As part of #myyearofyoga I thought I would add one post each day from now through Christmas of something for which I am #grateful. Today I'm grateful for these little angels and all the heartwarming smiles they bring to my life.

Oh So Grateful Day 2:
Today I'm #grateful for this generous little spirit who picked out and wrapped her brother's and daddy's Christmas gifts.

Day 253 of My Year of Yoga

"Ong namo guru dev namo" means "I bow to the Divine Teacher within." In a lot of my writing I talk about my teachers, the people outside of myself from whom I learn, especially my children. But my own inner teacher must be acknowledged because without that, I would not have the ability to see what is before me. We are all our own teachers. We all have the knowledge, theunderstanding, the light, and the spirit within us to show us the way. We do have the answers we need, we just haven't all learned to open ourselves up to our innate wisdom. Yoga poses, pranayama, or breathing exercises, and meditation unlock our energy blockages, quiet our overactive minds, and cultivate balance, concentration and awareness. It's with this practice that we begin to know ourselves, recognize the answers, and live a more joyful life. Trust yourself, trust the process, and trust your journey, for you are Divine and you know the way.

Today's Joyful Affirmation

I see only the positive.

Your Divine Self, a poem

My joy is yours
And yours is mine
Our love unites
Each one, divine.

Shine our light
And you shall see
That I am you
And you are me.

Our love is shared
Among us all
Believe in this
And never fall.

Your peace within
Forever still
Comforts you
And guides your will.

My will is yours
And yours in mine
Our connection shared
You are divine.

Namaste.

Ready, set...be still

One thing we can ALL be sure of is that something is happening.  Maybe you've felt this "happening" before - its something inside us.  Its beautiful and blissful.  It wells up, then trickles away. It arises from a place of stillness, a formless potency and joy.  It is your heart opening. And yet, if you've ever felt this extreme love and joy, it eventually fades aways.  When we get to a state where it never trickles away?  In yoga, it happens when we reach Dhyana, or meditation, where we can hold our attention in this place of stillness. The content of what is holding our attention does not matter. This will only happen when you are open and ready.

The Buddhist approach guides us to find that stillness and joy in the world in which we live. We can function in our illusionary world of going to work, raising our children, being with friends and loved ones, all while being still.  It comes back to being the “watcher” of the mind. Stepping away from the ego and simply observing. From here we can find stillness.

Waking up

I love the idea of the healing energy of yoga.  At the beginning of practice, you may be invited to make a dedication to someone or some people who could benefit from the healing powers of your practice. Every time we practice yoga, we are releasing a very special, healing energy that can literally be felt by others depending on its strength.  We are constantly giving off energy that can be felt by others. Sometimes its a negative energy- get a group of people in the room who don't get along well and you can feel the tension without the need for words.  Walk into a room of people who are feeling happy, excited, or moved by something, and you can feel the higher intensity vibrations, giving off a positive energy.  Its because of those vibrations that I know that there is something much more to us than what we see on the exterior (the body) and what we often listen to and follow (the ego.)

Its the ego that gives us our problems.  A Course in Miracles, which I'm studying right now, says that problems don't exist - worry, sadness, evil, pain, suffering, illness, are all things that we've created in our minds.  These things are illusions because they only exist in a world that is itself an illusion. What we perceive as reality is really a dream in which we are in a deep, deep, sleep, blind to what is underneath.  Truth, love, joy, eternal happiness.

This is overwhelming sometimes.  Other times, its very comforting.  As I've been reading and discussing all of this with others, I can't help but keep coming back to the movie The Matrix. I have to laugh at myself because it seems so odd that that would be a movie that resonates with me on a spiritual level, but I'm going to run with it.  What is REAL?  And how can we say there is no pain, suffering, sickness, and evil in the world when we can "see" it and "feel" it and "experience" it?

Because we choose to suffer. Our definition of good and bad comes from the ego. In truth, there is no good or bad. There just IS.  When asked why bad things happen - disastrous, unfair, unjust, just plain evil - what comes to me is this: most of us are in such a deep state of sleep that only something of significant proportions is going to wake us up.  Its often not until after a disaster of sorts that people seek out spiritual guidance.  And what about the people who are already waking up or who already See?  Perhaps those situations aren't for them, but for someone close to them who needs, not only to wake up, but to be brought into connection with someone already on that path who will serve as a teacher.  I don't know. I'm not there yet. But I am determined to see...

"Wouldn't it be wonderful if you could spare them from all suffering? No, it wouldn't. They would not evolve as human beings and would remain shallow, identified with the external form of things. Suffering drives you deeper. The paradox is that suffering is caused by identification with form and erodes identification with form. A lot of it is caused by the ego, although eventually suffering destroys the ego--but not until you suffer consciously.

Humanity is destined to go beyond suffering, but not in the way the ego thinks. One of the ego's many erroneous assumptions, one of its many deluded thoughts is "I should not have to suffer." Sometimes the thought gets transferred to someone close to you: "My child should not have to suffer." That thought itself lies at the root of suffering. Suffering has a noble purpose: the evolution of consciousness and the burning up of the ego. The man on the cross is an archetypal image. He is every man and every woman. As long as you resist suffering, it is a slow process because the resistance creates more ego to burn up. When you accept suffering, however, there is an acceleration of that process which is brought about by the fact that you suffer consciously. You can accept suffering for yourself, or you can accept it for someone else, such as your child or parent. In the midst of conscious suffering there is already the transmutation. The fire of suffering becomes the light of consciousness."
